A Few Severe Storms Possible

October 1, 2009

It looks like a little late night thunderstorm action could be your alarm clock tomorrow morning. That means I finally get to cash in on a normal night of sleep while severe weather threatens! I loved the fast paced action of severe weather forecasting and coverage when I was at the TV station, but there is something to be said for being able to roll over and go back to sleep after I hear that first rumble of thunder! The forecast contains this round of storms, and more stormy stuff to start next week. Here are the details!

Thursday: Becoming mostly cloudy with a 30% chance for a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 80s to near 90. The wind will be from the south at 8-16 mph.

Thursday Night: A line of strong to severe thunderstorms will move through between midnight and 6:00 A.M. The most likely severe threat with these storms will be damaging wind. It would serve you well to go out in the yard and bring in stuff that could blow around. Lows will be in the middle to upper 60s.

Friday: The threat for storms will end rapidly in the morning. Highs will be back down in the lower 80s.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy and cooler. Lows will be in the middle 50s.

Saturday: Becoming mostly cloudy late. Highs will be in the lower to middle 80s.

Sunday through Wednesday: Thunderstorms will take over once again. Things are trending wetter in the extended forecast and I’m bringing rain chances up. I’ll put rain chances at 60% for Sunday and Monday, and drop them to 30-40% for Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs will range from 82-86 each day, and there will be plenty of humidity. Lows will range from the middle 60s to near 70.

So to recap for tonight. There is a severe threat, though I certainly wouldn’t call this a high end threat. Look for plenty of thunder and lightning after midnight, with briefly gusty wind, very isolated areas of small hail, and about an inch of rain on average.
